What is Mission-Style Furniture?

By Patricia Stephens

Mission style furniture is easily recognizable by its bulky, boxy design. With roots influenced by both Spanish and Native American traditions, the Mission style has clean, simplistic lines. There are few fancy details.

The first furniture pieces to be called Mission were made in New York City in the 1890s. Mission style was an alternative to what some felt was "excessive ornamentation" of the Victorian-style furniture popular in the mid-to late- 1800s.

In keeping with its simplistic design, the Mission style is constructed with natural materials, like oak wood for frames and leather for seating. Traditionally, Mission-style furniture was built with red or white oak wood. In the past several years, other woods like cherry, maple, walnut, and ash have been used in Mission pieces.

The Mission style was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and is known for its functional design. Mission Style emphasizes showmanship over decoration.

Known for its simple horizontal and vertical lines, flat panels, and wood grain accents, Mission is a classic style.

Mission style furniture is incredibly durable and functional and will grace any room in your home or office. This type of furniture often uses a medium or dark stain that is designed to accentuate the grain of the wood. Mission style furniture is often considered timeless and continues to be popular today.
