Oak For Less FAQ & Store Policies

Many frequently asked questions are answered on this page.  Some of our store policies also appear in the context of the answers of many of these questions.  To see a full copy of the store sales policies, please visit one of our stores.  If you have a question that was not addressed in this section, please feel free to e-mail us at oakforless@hotmail.com (e-mail is usually checked daily) or phone one of our stores.

Q:  When a finish description says "distressed", what does that mean?

A:  Many manufacturers are offering finishes that are "distressed" or "slightly distressed".  A "distressed" finish is one that may have any or all of the following: rubbed edges (paint or finish is rubbed through), pin or nail holes, rasp-marks, cuts, paint spatters and specks, blackened areas, dents, gouges, splits, brush-marks, etc.  Even some finishes not labeled "distressed" may have paint spatters or brush marks as part of the finish.  Distressing is not damage nor a manufacturer defect.  These are finishing techniques meant to give a weathered, antique look to the wood surface, as if it had been used or around for many years.

Q:  Is that your best price?

A:  A few people feel that they aren't getting the best price unless they ask for further discounts or keep repeating "is that your best price?"  Please know that some stores have high prices and then offer a large discount - a sales tactic that makes the customer feel that they are getting a great deal.  We don't do that.  From time to time, we will have special promotions with coupons that give an extra discount, but our everday sales prices are always discounted well below manufacturers' suggested retail prices.  We also do not charge the customer extra for shipping, which costs us between 9 and 15%, sometimes more, so the price we offer is quite fair and reasonable.  Recently, to cover higher costs of materials, labor, energy, and disadvantages in exchange rates, several of our manufacturers increased their item prices as well as shipping costs.  So, to keep our prices discounted, we've made small adjustments in some of our prices, and no adjustments in others.  If we discount our already discounted prices, we would be selling at so near our cost that we would not remain open for business.  If a customer does not like our prices and appreciate our discount, they are always welcome to shop around.  If they shop around and compare for the same exact items, they will understand the value of our prices.

Q:  Why aren't there any prices on most of your website?

A:  We represent several different manufacturers, and these manufacturers send us pricing updates without notice, sometimes twice a year.  Therefore, keeping current pricing on every item on the website would be too labor-intensive and time-consuming, which would mean we would have to raise prices to keep someone updating the pricing on the website.  We keep things simple --- besides coming in to one of our stores, you are welcome to call or e-mail your question about items and we are happy to answer it and look up the current pricing for you.  This way, we keep the prices below suggested retail and give you our best price.  We carry many similar items, so please remember to include the specific item #s for the items you are asking about.

Q:  Why aren't there any finish examples on your website?

A:  Each of our manufacturers has different finishes available for each of their items, which we list under each item.  Also, finishes vary according to each manufacturer's supply.  For example, one manufacturer's Mission finish is not the same as another's - one may be darker, or redder, or even have an orangey tint, and each batch of stain may have slight differences as well.  Unfortunately though, the main issue is that finish colors are not shown accurately on every computer monitor, therefore, we prefer to have the customer come in to one of our stores to see a physical example of most finishes.

Q:  What is your sales policy on Clearance and Last One items?

A:  Clearance items are "as is" and are offered at deep discounts below our already discounted prices.  Some may even be at our cost.  Last One items are unique in that the manufacturer has discontinued that style or finish and we are unable to order more.  Therefore, all sales are final/no returns on Clearance and Last One items.

Q:  I saw an item on one of the manufacturer's webpages.  Can you get me a price?

A:  Absolutely.  Call one of our stores or e-mail us with the manufacturer's name and the item number and we will be happy to look up the price.

Q:  Can I buy and take home the item I want today?

A:  Sometimes.  We keep our prices low and the discount reflects the fact that we don't have a warehouse, we order factory-direct.  Our floor items are there as examples of the styles, finish choices, and quality and workmanship of the various manufacturers.  We prefer to have customers order what they like, since they will receive a new item in a finish and style they have chosen, and do not take our example item.  There may be exceptions from time to time, but most people are patient and willing to wait for their order.  One exception is Clearance or Last One items.  Those may be purchased directly from the floor.

Q:  Are all of your furniture items solid oak?

A:  Some items are solid oak while others use oak veneer over plywood or oak veneer over MDF (medium density fiberboard) or particle board.  Still others may be in different woods, like alder, walnut, or Asian hardwoods, with corresponding veneers.  Manufacturers offer dining chairs in solid oak as well as certain dining table tops.  Most desks, entertainment centers, hutches and buffets and bookcases will have solid oak doors, drawer fronts, and trim, but the large, flat areas will be oak veneer over a substrate, such as plywood, MDF, or particle board.  Substrates vary by manufacturer and are often used to provide stability where a single solid piece of wood may have a tendency to warp or split.

Q:  What is MDF?

A:  Some manufacturers offer items constructed with a substrate of MDF.  MDF stands for medium density fiberboard.  It is superior to particle board because it is made with wood fibers compressed together with adhesive, not large particles as found in particle board.  MDF is therefore much denser and much stronger than particle board, and resists warping.  MDF products usually offer a savings in cost compared to solid wood.

Q:  Does the furniture come assembled?

A:  Depending upon the manufacturer, some furniture items come assembled, while others have some assembly required.  Usually any assembly is light, such as attaching legs to the table or putting shelves in place.  Some chairs come assembled, while others are sold ready to assemble; it just depends on the manufacturer.  Bookcases, desks, and TV consoles basically come in one piece, with placement of any adjustable shelves or attachment of handles as the only assembly.

Q:  What should I bring when I come to pick up my furniture?

A:  Please note that Oak For Less is not able to provide loading assistance at every store, and many items require 2 strong people to load into a vehicle, so customers MUST bring help when coming for a pick up.  Upon pick up, the loading, tie-down (bungies/ropes), protective wrapping (with blankets, etc.), and transportation is the customer's sole risk and responsibility.  Sometimes a chair or box will appear small when looking at it in the store, but upon trying, it will not fit through a car doorway or trunk opening.  So, please make sure the item will fit into your vehicle prior to arriving for pick up.

Q:  Can items be shipped directly to a customer's home?
A:  No. The manufacturers will only ship items to one of our store locations.  You may pick up your items from one of our stores or we will be happy to arrange for delivery of your items (delivery does cost extra).

Q:  Do you deliver?

A:  Yes, delivery is available if the customer lives within our designated delivery areas within the Phoenix metro area.  We use independent contractors to deliver our furniture, so all charges are payable directly to them at the time of delivery.  Delivery charges are based upon your location and the number of pieces.  Extra charges apply for going up stairs or for extra heavy or bulky items.  Set up and assembly are not included in the delivery charge and are payable as separate charges if the customer would like that service.

Q:  Why don't you offer free delivery?

A:  No matter who offers it, delivery is never free.  With the price of gas and time/effort it takes to move the furniture, someone has to pay the delivery cost.  If a store offers free delivery, they usually increase the price of their goods to make up for that cost.  We have chosen to keep our furniture prices discounted for everyone, and offer delivery at a reasonable cost to just those people that ask for it.

Q:  Why do I have to pay any balance before the furniture is delivered?

A:  All balances must be paid in full by phone or in person at the store before a delivery is scheduled.  Due to insurance and safety reasons, delivery drivers cannot accept CODs.

Q:  What if I get my furniture and I don't like it?

A:  Buying furniture is a serious purchase and not something to do on a whim.  Only buy furniture when you know you want it, its size, finish, and style will work in the space you want to place it, and you know you can afford it.  If you cancel the sale and return your item(s), you have breached your contract and you are subject to a restocking fee of 25%, which is in compliance with Arizona State Law. The customer is also responsible for transporting the furniture back to the store.  If the item is returned within 3 days of receipt, and has no damage, the refund, minus the restocking fee will be given in store credit.  After 3 days, all sales are considered final, with no returns and no refund of any kind, unless there is a manufacturing defect, in which case we warranty it for a year and will either repair or replace the item. (Warranty does not apply to Clearance or Last One items)

Q:  What if I receive the item during a delivery and there is damage?

A:  The customer has 72 hours from delivery to inform Oak For Less of any damage (delivery-caused or manufacturer-defect) so that we may arrange for repair or exchange with the manufacturer.  After 72 hours, the sale is considered final.

Q:  I have a piece of furniture that I want to match.  Can you match the finish?

A:  Each piece of furniture made in the same finish by the same manufacturer will have a finish that varies slightly from piece to piece.  Each piece of wood accepts the stain differently, so no two will be perfectly identical.  In addition, manufacturers use different names for finishes...for example, a light oak finish can be: "honey", "light", "golden", "fruitwood" and even "medium".  These all may describe a similar finish, but they are named differently by each manufacturer.  And not all manufacturers offer similar finishes.  To match a finish as close as possible, a drawer or shelf from an existing piece should be brought in to the store as a comparison to existing finish examples.  Even then, what you see in our showrooms as examples from the manufacturers may vary because every piece of wood takes the stain differently and manufacturer batches of stain can vary in formula.  There can be no guarantee of exactly the same finish from piece to piece, but we do our best to get as close as possible.

A:  Oak For Less Furniture guarantees the lowest prices in Arizona by selling well below manufacturers’ suggested retail prices.  But beyond our everyday discounted prices, we also offer to match and beat any sales price in the state of Arizona by 5%.  If you find a local retail competitor’s advertisement stating a lower price for an identical item, show us the ad and Oak For Less will match that price and beat it by 5%.  Our guarantee is good up to 30 days after you purchase from us.  If during that time, you bring in an ad showing a lower price for the item you purchased, we will refund the difference, plus 5%.  That’s our guarantee!**
